Automate Appointment Booking without Breaking the Budget

Launch Pad News, Small Business IT Management, TechRecs: Cool Tools & Hot Topics 2 comments

We talked with quite a few sole proprietors who wish they could afford to automate portions of their business. Finding inexpensive tools that allow automatic appointment booking and payments online is difficult for many of these small business owners.  BookFresh, formerly HourTown, hopes to help the 22.1 million Americans who claim sole proprietorship with a time-saving solution that allows customers to book and pay for appointments online. Smaller businesses lacking the resources to build their own website can have BookFresh create and optimize a “mini-website” to draw attention to empty time slots.  Plans to announce a partnership with Webs.com, one of the largest free website providers, will make that possible.

HOW IT WORKS
Creating a BookFresh profile is relatively easy thanks to drop down menus and wizards that allow business owners to enter services and corresponding prices. From there you can install the “Book Now” button, a widget that consists of a line of code you can insert in your website or even in your Craigslist ad.  When customers use the “Book Now” button, BookFresh asks you to confirm the appointment time and then it sends a confirmation email to the customer. Unclaimed appointments are “advertised” along with basic business services by a mini business website BookFresh optimizes for both Google and Yahoo.

All Web Hosting is NOT Created Equal

Launch Pad News, Small Business IT Management, Small Business Web Strategies No comments

There are many bargain basement hosting companies. Are the really right for your business?  Here are some quick tips to make sure the hosting partner you select is really what you expect:

How to Spot Hosting Companies to Stay Away From
Stay away from the hosting provider selling space and bandwidth as a core offering.  If a provider can’t supply value-added services that protect and drive revenue for your business, then the provider is nothing but an interchangeable commodity.

Cheap Hosting is … Well Cheap Hosting
There is a reason the cheapest Web hosting plan is the cheapest.  Why invite disaster? The bottom line is that hosters that differentiate service by price most often do not have the resources to fully support a growing business. Some pitfalls of going with a low-cost provider include availability issues, security breaches, shortage of support  on weekends and evenings, and concerns about the financial viability of the service provider. Stop viewing hosting as a commodity and be selective – the Web is critical to the economics of your business.  You are trusting you website and e-mail services to this provider.

June TechRec: The Coolest Desktop/Notebook Backup Ever

Launch Pad News, TechRecs: Cool Tools & Hot Topics 1 comment

Why Rebit?
One of the biggest problems we see in small businesses is that user desktop and notebook data is not backed up.  While the goal is always to centralize data on the server.  Sometimes this can be difficult in non-standardized environments or organizations where users travel frequently.  Also, the amount of time that would be spent reinstalling applications on a user’s desktop or notebook and getting everything back the way it was in the event of a crash can be daunting and very time consuming.

Enter the Rebit.  The Rebit disk drive backup plugs into one of your computer’s USB ports. Simply plug it in and click “ok” to allow it to run on your PC. That’s it. After that, it transparently keeps you backed up throughout the day, everyday. Forever.
